Wendell BURNETTE

Wendell Burnette, FAIA, is an award-winning architect whose projects reflect many of the same key values as the late Frank Welch: space and light, context and place, organic materials that are carefully crafted, and respect for the environment and landscapes in which we live. Burnette’s work has been featured in over 150 publications worldwide, and has received many prestigious awards, including a P/A Design award from Architecture magazine, three “Record House” awards from Architectural Record magazine, and a National AIA Honor Award.

Bernard TSCHUMI

Bernard Tschumi, FAIA RIBA, is widely recognized as one of today’s foremost architects. His firm has established an international reputation for its innovative design solutions for projects of different sizes and scales, from small facilities to large-scale master plans. Major built works include the Parc de La Villette, the Acropolis Museum, Le Fresnoy Center for the Contemporary Arts, MuséoParc Alésia, the Paris Zoo, the Vacheron-Constantin Headquarters and its subsequent expansion, New York’s Blue Tower, the Binhai Science Museum, Philharmonic Hall for Le Rosey, and a large educational complex for the University of Paris-Sud opening in 2022.

Tschumi’s belief that architecture is the most important innovation of our time has influenced both his practice and his academic career. He is a tenured professor at Columbia’s GSAPP, where he formerly served as Dean. Publications include Architecture Concepts: Red is Not a Color, Tschumi, and Tschumi on Architecture. His drawings and models are in the collections of several major museums, including MoMA and the Centre Pompidou, which presented a major retrospective of his work. The Venice Biennale and the NAI have also exhibited his designs. Tschumi was awarded France’s Grand Prix National d’Architecture as well as numerous awards from the AIA and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Shane Coen has led Coen+Partners, his innovative landscape architecture studio, for over 25 years. Grounded in an approach of contextual driven design, the firm collaborates with the world’s leading and emerging global design architects, artists, and engineers to create site solutions that are rooted in place while embracing programmatic social and ecological goals with innovation and beauty. The studio has built a distinguished body of award-winning work because of its leadership, creativity, and disciplined design approach. It has also received awards from the AIA, the ASLA, the GSA Design Excellence program and recognition in The New York Times, Metropolis, Dwell, and Architectural Record.

In addition to his practice, Shane has taught studios at Harvard’s GSD, lectures extensively throughout the world, and was featured in a waterfront symposium organized by the Netherlands. Early in his career Shane was recognized with an Emerging Voices Award by the Architectural League and was the first-place recipient of the Landezine International Landscape Award. The studio’s body of work was recognized with a National Design Award from Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, bestowed in recognition of excellence, innovation, and enhancement of the quality of life.

Toshiko MORI

Toshiko Mori, FAIA is the founding principal of Toshiko Mori Architect and the Robert P. Hubbard Professor in the Practice of Architecture at the Harvard GSD. In recognition of her outstanding body of work, she was inducted to the National Academy of Design, the Academy of Arts and Letters, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Toshiko Mori Architect (TMA) is known for nearly four decades of innovative and influential work in a diverse body of projects that have received numerous design awards. TMA’s intelligent approach to ecologically sensitive siting strategies, historical context, and innovative use of materials reflects a creative integration of design and technology. Their designs demonstrate a thoughtful sensitivity to detail and involve extensive research into the site conditions and surrounding context.

Mori’s recent awards and honors include the Louis Auchincloss Prize from the Museum of the City of New York; the ACSA Gold Medal; Architectural Record’s Women in Design Leader Award; the AIA / ASCA Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education; and Architectural Digest’s AD100. Her project “Thread: Artists’ Residency and Cultural Center” was awarded the AIA and also inaugural FIBRA Award for Contemporary Plant Fiber-based Architecture. She has published two new monographs, one with a+u magazine for their February 2020 issue and another with ArchiTangle titled “Toshiko Mori Architect: Observations.”

Michael HSU

Michael Hsu, FAIA, IIDA founded Michael Hsu Office of Architecture (MHOA), a fully integrated architecture and interior design firm, in 2005. Following graduation from the UT Austin School of Architecture, Hsu worked at OMA in the Netherlands before returning to Austin where he has practiced since 1998. Hsu is a member of the University of Texas School of Architecture’s Advisory Council. He is also a Past President of AIA Austin, which honored his firm as its 2016 Firm of the Year.

MHOA was formed with the goal of producing locally engaged, design-driven architecture and interiors that unite people through design. The firm advocates a simple, edited design palette, using creative materials and techniques to create unexpected results. The work is rooted in hospitality and placemaking with diverse projects that include large mixed-use developments, adaptive reuse projects, public realm design, architectural branding, single family homes, hotels, restaurants, workspaces, and bespoke furniture design. The firm has several projects in Dallas, including the Terminal at Katy Trail, which is currently under construction. Notable built projects include the Uchi family of restaurants, South Congress Hotel, Montrose Collective, MKT, LINE Austin Hotel and Shake Shack’s corporate headquarters. MHOA’s outstanding body of work has received numerous national and regional design awards.

Bruce Bernbaum is a Founding Partner of Bernbaum/Magadini Architects, a well-respected Dallas firm known for creating elegant and livable residences. Committed to following his clients’ vision, his principal-driven team focuses on listening, discovering, and embracing needs and goals. Russell Norton Buchanan, FAIA, LEED AP
Russell is the founder and principal of Buchanan Architecture. His work to date represents a wide range of project types including institutional/cultural/municipal, adaptive reuse, multi-family, historic preservation, commercial, mixed-use, and residential. In addition to his architecture practice Russell has designed a collection of furniture and his Spring Table is included in the permanent collection of the Dallas Museum of Art. Russell’s work in architecture, furniture design and artwork has been widely published in the national and international press. Articles about his work can be found in Architectural Digest, Architectural Record, Architecture, Texas Architect, Metropolitan Home, and the I.D. Review. His work has also been featured on the AIA Dallas Tour of Homes and The Forum’s 365 Modern Living Series. Russell is an Adjunct Professor at The University of Texas at Arlington. He is also a founding member of the Dallas Architecture Forum and served on its Board of Directors.

Gary Cunningham, FAIA
Gary Cunningham founded Cunningham Architects in 1981. He has been responsible for a wide range of projects throughout Texas and the surrounding regions, encompassing numerous commercial, religious, residential, educational and cultural projects. Gary hosted The Forum’s Panel Series for many years at his studio, and his work has been featured by The Forum and AIA Dallas. Regardless of the program or scale of the project, his approach is one that incorporates the client and consultants as an inclusive team whose purpose is to deliver projects that are grounded in a true sense of place, while staying on schedule and within budget. Gary received the prestigious O’Neal Ford Medal for design achievement in 2019 from The Texas Society of Architects.

Robert Meckfessel, FAIA, LEED AP
Robert Meckfessel brings over 35 years of experience in the planning and design of institutional, residential, and commercial projects. Many of these projects have been recognized for innovation and excellence in urban design, architecture, sustainability, and preservation from professional and industry organizations, including AIA Dallas, the Texas Society of Architects, Docomomo US, Preservation Dallas, Preservation Texas, ULI, and NCTCOG. Bob has served as President of leading organizations involved with the quality and public awareness of our built environment, including AIA Dallas, Preservation Dallas, the Trinity Commons Foundation, and The Dallas Architecture Forum. He currently serves as President of Docomomo-US.

Sharon Odum, AIA
Sharon Odum is the sole proprietor of Sharon Odum Architect, founded in 2000. The firm is committed to producing thoughtful, conscientious designs through open communication and collaboration with the client and the craftspeople who produce the work. As a process driven architect, Sharon’s aim is to define the essence of the problem and provide a direct solution, which results in an honest expression of material, structure, program, and place. Sharon is an Advisory Board Member of the Dallas Architecture Forum and is also Past Panel Chair. As an Adjunct Professor at UTA School of Architecture, she has taught Design Studios, lectured, and participated in student reviews. Her work has been recognized by the Dallas AIA with multiple design awards.

Marcel Quimby, FAIA
Marcel Quimby, FAIA, is a preservation architect, specializing in the areas of preservation architecture and planning. She is committed to the restoration and adaptive use of historic buildings, structures and communities and has led the restoration of both large and small projects ranging in scale from historic log cabins to the Hall of State in Fair Park, a National Historic Landmark. Marcel’s investigative skills and talents in determining appropriate treatment allow the buildings’ unique character and feature to be given new life. Her work has benefited from her recognition that each historical building is unique, and many of her projects have been recognized with local and state preservation awards.

Dan Shipley, FAIA
Dan Shipley is a native Texan who worked as a carpenter and draftsman in East Texas before he moved to Dallas in 1980. After five years with Thomas and Booziotis Architects, four years with Metro Architects, and two years with HKS he founded Shipley Architects in 1991.In its thirty-one years of existence Shipley Architects has typically consisted of two to five licensed architects working on a variety of projects including residential, multi-family, private schools, and public work. Dan’s work has been published in Architectural Record, the New York Times, Texas Architect and Metropolitan Home. His projects have been honored locally, regionally, and nationally, including Residential Architects’ Top Firm of the Year.

Ron Wommack, FAIA
Ron Wommack, FAIA established his firm, Ron Wommack Architect, in 1990. Prior to establishing his own firm, Ron had worked for The Oglesby Group and Frank Welch Associates. Ron’s projects have ranged from the refurbishing of older housing units into viable urban dwellings, the development of new denser housing typologies, and single-family residences to corporate office facilities and public / community projects. For this body of work, the firm has received more than a dozen AIA design awards from TxA and AIA Dallas. The firm also received D-Magazine Home of the Year awards, and awards from Preservation Dallas. Ron served as an adjunct professor at the UTA and as a visiting studio critic at Texas Tech University. Ron’s firm was the 2006 AIA Dallas Firm of the Year, and he is also a past Board President of The Dallas Architecture Forum.

Kate Aoki is an architect, and the Head of Exhibition Design at the Dallas Museum of Art. Kate is fortunate to practice in a profession that satisfies both her passion for fine art and the design of space. Kate spent more than a decade at GFF, Morrison Dilworth + Walls, and DSGN Associates, with projects that improved the community. As Head of Exhibition Design at the DMA, Kate design spaces that engage visitors while inviting them to learn more about the art they experience and the communities in which they thrive. Kate was co-chair of AIA-Dallas’ Communities by Design Committee, and she was awarded a Presidential Citation by AIA Dallas. She has served as an Adjunct Professor at UTA CAPPA and is the President-Elect of AIA-Dallas. She is also a member of the Board of Directors and founder of the Design Society for The Dallas Architecture Forum.

Kelly Mitchell, AIA
Kelly Mitchell is a founding partner of Mitchell Garman Architects. Specializing in hospitality and residential design, the firm has been recognized as one of the premiere restaurant design firms in the metroplex. Her passion for the restaurant niche results in spaces that are modern, warm, and comfortable. In addition, Mitchell Garman Architects’ residential work has been showcased on the AIA Dallas Tour of Homes numerous times. Kelly is an active member of AIA Dallas, where she is a former Board member and currently Chairs the Community Honors Committee. In 2020, Mitchell Garman Architects was awarded the Firm of the Year by AIA Dallas. Victor F. “Trey” Trahan III, FAIA, NOMA, is the Founder and CEO of Trahan Architects. The practice is rooted in the importance of environmental conservation, social justice, culture, and the arts. Trahan Architects is ranked the number one design firm in the U.S. by Architect Magazine, the official publication of the AIA. The firm has won over one hundred national, state, regional, and local AIA awards, an ASLA Honor Award, five National AIA Awards, and several international design competitions. Trahan received the Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Award and an Emerging Voices award from the Architectural League. Trey was named the 2021 Laureate for The American Prize for Architecture by The Chicago Athenaeum. He served on the International Council of the Van Alen Institute and is currently a board member of The Cultural Landscape Foundation. Trahan has lectured widely including MIT, USC, Tulane, Carnegie Mellon and Duke. He has also spoken at symposiums and conventions, such as the Architecture and Culture annual symposium at Fallingwater.

The Dallas Architecture Forum, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing public education about architecture, design, public space and the urban environment, continues its 2023-2024 Lecture Series on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at 7:00 pm. The Forum is pleased to present architect Carol Ross Barney as the speaker for this Season’s Bob James Memorial Lecture. This Lecture will be held in the Horchow Auditorium of the Dallas Museum of Art. Forum members may attend for free. Tickets for non-members will be available at the door – $5 for Students (with student i.d.), $25 General Admission. Check-in and pre-Lecture Reception will begin at 6:15 pm in the Hamon Atrium of the DMA.

Carol Ross Barney, FAIA, HASLA, the 2023 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal recipient, is an architect, urbanist, mentor, and educator, and has relentlessly advocated that excellent design is a right, not a privilege. Dedicated to design of public spaces, her exploration into the power of how the built environment can improve our daily lives has produced distinctive structures that have become cultural icons. Notable projects include the design of the new Oklahoma City Federal Building replacing the bombed Murrah Federal Building; McDonald’s Chicago and Disney World Flagship Restaurants; Searle Visitor Center at the Lincoln Park Zoo; JRC Synagogue; CTA Cermak and Morgan Street Stations; UMD Civil Engineering Building; Multi-Modal Terminal at O’Hare; NASA Aerospace Communications Facility; and Chicago’s new DuSable Park. Her studio also designed the iconic Chicago Riverwalk.

Carol is a graduate of the University of Illinois and has taught an advanced Design Studio at the Illinois Institute of Technology for over thirty years, sharing her expertise and shaping the next generation of architects. Carol’s exceptional work has garnered over 200 major design awards, including the prestigious Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum National Design Award. She has also received fourteen National American Institute of Architects Honor Awards for Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Urban Planning and Design, as well as over 45 AIA Chicago Awards. Her commitment to sustainable design has been recognized with two AIA Committee on the Environment Top Ten Project Awards. Her studio’s work has been widely published, including features in Architect, Architectural Record, Dezeen, Architects’ Newspaper and Metropolis.
