Dallas has made amazing progress in the development of parks and trails over the last twenty-five years. During this time-period area residents and visitors have witnessed a substantial increase in the amount of park space throughout the city; the opening of the transformative Klyde Warren deck park; new parks in key areas of downtown Dallas, and the opening and expansion of the trails system in the city. Though more progress in creating more green space is wanted, needed and has been championed by Mayor Johnson and City Hall, much has been accomplished. This Panel will examine key development in the City’s progress.

Join us for an important Panel Discussion as leading thought-leaders discuss some of the hallmark achievements in providing more parks and trails in Dallas. The Panel will be moderated by Willis Winters, FAIA, past Director of the City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department. Panelists will be Amy Meadows, President of Parks for Downtown Dallas; Tara Green, Principal of OJB and former President of Klyde Warren Park; Bud Melton, regional champion for bicycle and walking trails; and Paul Dyer, who was the long-time Director of the Dallas Park and Recreation Department.

The Panel is free and open to the public. No reservations are needed to attend this Panel hosted at Perkins&Will. Please join us, and invite family, friends and colleagues to also attend to learn about the growth of public space in Dallas!

Philip Kafka

Philip Kafka is the Founder and President of Prince Concepts, a development company that makes strategic investments to revitalize blighted inner-city neighborhoods. Kafka began redevelopment work in Detroit in late 2012, where he has focused on abandoned sections of the Core City neighborhood of Detroit. He currently owns 25 contiguous acres where he has completed the development and renovation of previously derelict buildings slated for demolition. This development work has occurred across a variety of programs and manifests as small projects, including the True North live/work housing development and the Caterpillar apartments. Architect Edwin Chan, founder of EC3 and previous Design Partner with Frank Gehry, has designed many of these projects for Kafka. They include public parks and spaces incorporating over 600 new trees designed by landscape architect Julie Bargmann of D.I.R.T. studio. These projects are constructed with a consistent attitude – one that promotes and prioritizes high quality space – public and private. Kafka has also taken his development philosophy to Fort Worth, Texas where the inaugural PS 1200 project, designed by AIA Gold Medal Winner Marlon Blackwell, along with landscape design by Bargmann, will have its official opening in Fall 2023.

Kafka’s projects have received many prestigious design awards. In 2021, Kafka’s company, Prince Concepts, was named Best Developer in the Midwest by Architect’s Newspaper, and in 2022, Prince Concepts was named one of the ten most innovative architecture focused companies in the world by Fast Company. Philip is frequently invited to lecture at schools including Illinois Institute of Technology, Fay Jones School of Architecture, the Harvard GSD, Yale, Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, the University of Michigan, and Wayne State in Detroit. Kafka’s projects have also been recognized for their design excellence by Progressive Architect, The Architect’s Newspaper, and as a Finalist for the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize. PS 1200 is a Finalist for The Dallas Architecture Forum’s Design Recognition: Looking Forward competition in the “Retail and Mixed Use” category. Kafka serves on the boards of Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize.

The Dallas Architecture Forum, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing public education about architecture, design, and the urban environment, inaugurates its 2023-2024 Panel Discussion Series by presenting Women Engineers Shaping the Built Environment. This Panel Discussion will be held at the Angelika Film Center at Mockingbird Station at 6:30 pm. This event is FREE TO THE PUBLIC – No Reservations Required. Pre-Panel Reception will begin at 6:15 pm in the Angelika lobby. The Panel will begin at 6:30pm.

For many years, Engineering was a profession dominated almost exclusively by men. That “steel ceiling” has begun to be broken by a group of talented, determined women. The Dallas Architecture Forum is pleased to present a Panel Discussion on the topic of “Women Engineers Shaping the Built Environment”. The Panel, moderated by Maria Gomez, AIA will feature three women who have pioneered leadership roles in the engineering profession. Join us on Wednesday, October 25th for this FREE Panel, featuring Camille Barton, Ann Piazza and Emily Zoellner, which will discuss not only the essential role engineering has in designing and building successful projects, but also the challenges and opportunities for women in the engineering field.

Topics to be covered by the Panelists include their career trajectories, the role that engineers perform in the design process, and highlights of some significant projects from their illustrious careers. They will dialogue about how architects and engineers can successfully collaborate, innovation trends in the industry, and how engineers incorporate sustainability and resiliency into their projects. The Panelists will also discuss how mentorship and active education and advocacy can increase the number of women in engineering until the “steel ceiling” is completely removed. Join us for this free Panel, open to all design professions and the general public, at the Angelika Theater, Mockingbird Station, on Wednesday, October 25, 2023.

The Trinity Park Conservancy, formerly called the The Trinity Trust, is spearheading plans to bring a long-desired vision for activating the Trinity River between the Margaret McDermott and Margaret Hunt Hill bridges to become a place for the public to engage with the Trinity River. Guided by the Balanced Vision Plan, a coordinated plan created for the Trinity River Corridor, the Conservancy is bringing this portion of the river “to life” as it works hand-in-hand with citizens and communities. As one of the first major projects in the area, the Conservancy, in conjunction with Michael Van Valkenberg Landscape Architects and Lake | Flato Architects, is implementing the design for major portions of the Harold Simmons Park between the two bridges. The Park will connect neighborhoods through a series of elevated overlooks and gateways to the river and its natural habitats for plants and wildlife. In addition, it will provide new access via additional trails and river crossings to unite the two sides of the river.

Join The Dallas Architecture Forum for this special evening at the Trinity Park Conservancy offices to hear from Tony Moore, its President and CEO, as he educates us on the plans that have been developed and now are beginning to be implemented. The evening will include the overview by Mr. Moore and the opportunity to see the large-scale models for the various areas of the park. Learn how the Conservancy, building on the landmark projects in the areas, including the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, the Margaret McDermott Bridge, and the Ronald Kirk Pedestrian Bridge, is working with citizens of Dallas to re-imagine our Trinity River as a great natural environment and place to visit.
